House guests

As I've written before, it has been so awesome -- essential -- to have the help of both of our moms. Andy's mom recently returned for a second round of grandma love and was later joined by Andy's dad. Here is the two of them with Riley:

For the last week, we've been having a blast with my sister Caroline and her 4-year-old son Rene. Rene has been such a sweetheart with his cousin, stroking him gently, showing concern when he cries and giving him kisses, like in this picture:

We have enjoyed the hottest weather of the year while they've been here (90 degrees is something to celebrate in San Francisco!), so we took advantage of it with a day at the beach. At first we set up a tent to shield Riley from the sun but a) it was too hot in there and b) my remarkable lack of outdoor skills conspired with the wind to knock over the tent within an hour.

 

It turns out Riley was perfectly content under a standard rain umbrella and in the shaded embrace of his doting aunt Caroline:

With Caroline's cooking, cleaning and baby whispering, and Rene's delightfulness, it has been a real treat to have them around.
