Baby talk
This last weekend while in Big Sur for my friends Joe and Emily's wedding, I had my most glorious hour of parenting on record. After the wedding, I went back to the hotel where my mom was taking care of Riley. She said he had been very happily playing while I was away and seemed to want to communicate. I started sticking my tongue out and noticed that he began mirroring me. I started forming Os with my mouth and he followed that cue. Then I would copy his facial gestures, and he would break into a broad smile and coo, almost like he was laughing. He started making sounds which I would mimic right back at him. He would respond, and I would too as if we were in conversation.
As we alternated gestures and sounds, it really started to feel like we were talking to each other for the first time. It was awesome! I felt entirely connected to him and excited about all of the conversations we will have for years to come. I am truly, deeply smitten. :-)))))
