Scooter

It's happening. Time is starting to fly. My baby is no longer a baby.

Nothing has marked the transition from baby to boy for me more than seeing Riley ride his scooter to day care. It seems like just two minutes ago he needed to be pushed in a stroller to get anywhere. Now, he's getting himself places. The next thing you know, he'll be riding a bike to school. Shortly thereafter, he'll be grabbing my clipper card as he heads out the door (alone) to grab the BART. How is this happening so fast?

But Riley's not exactly studying for his driver's license yet. For now, I'm just going to pause and appreciate how cute Rilz is on this scooter. Recently he and his buddy Zach met up after daycare to ride together. The boys had an awesome time, zooming around a path together, over and over again, helmets on tight. Occasionally they fell off their scooters, but they got right back on as if they hadn't noticed. They could have ridden all night if they hadn't needed to get home for the delicious dinners their dads were preparing.

It reminded me of when my sister and I would roller skate around our elementary school in the afternoons, after my dad got home from work. I loved those afternoons of exploration outside the house. I want Riley to experience such afternoons himself, learning how it feels to whoosh downhill, figuring out how to fall without getting too banged up, discovering colorful leaves and twisted pine cones along his path. Enjoying just being a kid on a warm autumn afternoon.

So I suspect we'll be spending many afternoons this fall scooting around various playgrounds and schoolyards. It's time to let this little boy kick off into the next phase of his childhood.
