Sandbox
We are truly enjoying the incredible streak of sunny, clear days in San Francisco. Today it was well into the 70s (I had to bust out the sunscreen!), so we headed to Golden Gate Park. For the second time in his life, Riley got to test out a sandbox:
If you look closely you can see the sand around his mouth. I'm not sure exactly how much sand he ate but I can report that he later consumed a smaller than usual dinner!
Riley was much more tentative in his first sandbox experience, just last week in our neighborhood playground with his friend Nate. He cried a little when first placed in the sand (perhaps unsettled by the shifting ground below?) and mostly watched Nate play. Later the boys exchanged foot massages:
After they tired of the sand, Nate and Riley explored the rest of the playground. Riley approached each new toy with a bit of apprehension.
Here you can see his hand is outstretched, reaching for a touchstone, some semblance of control or security.
That first visit to the playground was marked by nervous exploration. I think Riley was curious about the playground, but also somewhat intimidated by the new experience.
Well this week, it was a completely different story. Our sandbox pro acted like he built that playground. As soon as we sat him down he started grabbing fistfuls of sand and, to my surprise, even started burying his legs. Not sure where he got the idea for that, but I sure was glad to see how happy it made him.
I have a feeling we're going to be spending A LOT of time at playgrounds from here on out.

Now he needs a little pool with sand in it to play in his own yard!!!
