3 weeks

Here we go again...for some reason, I am gifted at making gassy, fussy babies. [I'd like to think I make charming, well-behaved toddlers, but that's a couple years down the road.] While it may still prove to be a fluke, the story of week three appears to be that Sloane's digestive system is driving her nuts.

She has lovely peaceful moments like this one.

Then she falls apart.

Basically, if we hold her, we get the first image; if we put her down we get the latter.

Typically babies with sensitive tummies start to demonstrate major distress around three weeks. Then it peaks at six weeks and dissipates. We held out hope for that timeline with Rilz, but it continued for much, much longer (he really wasn't settled until about a year and a half). So at this point, I say six weeks would be a blessing. I'll take it.

Despite the tummy trouble, Sloane is shining in a few other departments. She's a pretty impressive sleeper at night. I don't want to jinx it, but for the last week she's started her night with a 4-5.5. hour block of sleep each night. Then she'll usually drop in another one or two blocks of 2.5-3 hour sleep. This is enormously helpful, as it fuels me to get through the rough spots. Sometimes she'll also allow herself a long nap like that in the first half of the day. For example, on her three week birthday, her GiGi (Andy's mom) and I took her to see her first movie, Gravity. She fell asleep just before we got to the theatre, slept through the entire film, which was at times extremely loud, and stayed asleep until we got home (2.5 hours total). I hope Sandra Bullock won't be offended that Sloane considered the movie a snoozefest.

Sloaney Macaroni also has notable neck control. Since her three week birthday she's been picking her head up off my shoulder, balancing and peering all around for a good minute at a time. Babies normally do this at a month or later. More surprising, Sloane has been grabbing for things that interest her since she was a week old. This doesn't usually happen until three months so I'm a little confused by it. But it's definitely happening. I'd high five her, but that's still a little advanced.
