Roasting marshmallows

We may not be camping out on this summer vacation, but that doesn't mean we can't roast some s'mores!

Backyard fire pit -- check.

Long branches fallen from plentiful Connecticut trees -- check.

A kid who discovered the awesomeness that is toasty marshmallows -- check.

The only thing we need now is some melted chocolate on graham crackers. Oops, looks like our little chocolate-face couldn't wait for all the melty ingredients to be ready at the same time. So instead of s'mores it was more like chocolaty crackers with a side of fluff. But it's all good in the outdoors.

After probably a dozen gooey marshmallows, we started reading Riley's favorite book this week (his book obsessions, though strong, rarely last longer than 10 days). The Berenstain Bears and the Ghosts of the Forest appropriately features cubs roasting their dinner around a campfire and a slightly spooky, but mostly silly ghost story. Riley loved it and -- although we prepared for a sugar-filled nighttime fright -- he when right to bed after his marshmallow binge. Now that's a happy ending.
