Ba(ll)!

After 14 months of speculation, we have finally learned Riley's first word: ball!

He's been using the sounds "da-da," "ma-ma," "uh-oh" and others for months to refer to any number of concepts, objects and people.

But today, for the first time, Riley used a new sound to identify a specific object, a ball. At first, when he said "ba" while chasing after his friend Katie's tiny, hot pink ball, I just thought he was babbling. [Yep, that's me, Mom of the Year, not recognizing her own kid's first word!] Fortunately, Katie's mom Danielle encouraged Riley, "That's right, ball!" It occurred to me that she was right, Riley just might be trying to say "ball." To test the theory, I bought him a big red ball. And, what do you know, Riley ran right to it saying "ba! ba! ba!"

It looks like we've got a talker on our hands. Can't wait to hear what's next.
