Observations

Riley is enjoying his last few days as a six-month-old. And I use the word enjoying on purpose: this boy seems to love life. His most frequent expression is a wide-eyed, giant open-mouthed smile, which he punctuates by shaking his head back and forth. It's as if he's exclaiming, "Hello world! Isn't today magnificent?!?"

As Riley creeps toward the seven-month mark, he also inches toward mobility. He now pivots 360 degrees on his belly and practically begs his body to crawl. He reaches his arms, pulls his knees up, scrapes at the floor in desperate attempts to scoot forward. It seems a little early to me, but his day care provider thinks he could start crawling any day.

Until then, I think he'll busy himself by wiggling. This kid, who for six months was the most relaxed baby in the neighborhood, has turned into a crazy wiggle worm. He squirms in my arms (please tell me the days of long cuddly hugs aren't over yet!). He dances on the changing table (it is nearly impossible to get a diaper on this kid!). He has suddenly turned into a nonstop motion-machine.

I'm most pleased to report that Riley delights in the most mundane sights he observes. He is transfixed by the cars that stream up and down our street. He is absolutely fascinated by the garage door opening and closing. And today, when his child care provider, Renee, threw a party to celebrate the first birthday of one of his colleagues (is there a parallel word for babies?), Riley was thrilled to discover she had filled the room with balloons bouncing on long ribbons. Apparently the other kids rejected and even feared the unfamiliar decorations. But not Riley. Although half a year younger than the other kids, he freaked out over the balloons and delighted in them throughout the day.

So on balance, it's been a decent month. Boo for the wiggles but two very enthusiastic thumbs up for the boy's willingness to embrace his surroundings. Smiley Riley, indeed.
