Highlight Reel

Our summer vacation to Connecticut was picture perfect, and we've got proof.

To celebrate Riley's 25-month birthday and the fact that he's responding well to little bits of dairy in his diet, the boy got his first taste of ice cream at an old-fashioned country creamery. Here he is enjoying watermelon sherbet. He only ate an ounce or two of this "extra-small" cup, but he showed no signs of tummy trouble afterward. Hurray! More experiments to come. To the extent they'll involve ice cream, I know who'll be most excited about that news!

One more hurray is in order, this time for tractors.

Riley's grandpa taught him how to mow a lawn, Connecticut style.

By the time we left, Rilz was a pro. He's planing to advertise his services to Grandpa's neighbors next summer.

Thanks to Riley's Gramdma (AKA GiGi) and his aunt Chris, Rilz enjoyed a bounty of learning toys in CT, including puzzles, binoculars, play farms and this magnifying glass.

Riley took advantage of the giant open spaces near Grandpa and GiGi's house, running with abandon, getting chased, watching kites and learning games like Simon Says and Red Light, Green Light.

Due to weather delays in Chicago, our trip was extended by two days. What a boon! We used one of these bonus day to visit a small county fair where Riley watched cows get milked and sheep sheared, enjoyed his third ice cream (!) and rode the carnival train over and over again. It was a nice end to a truly fun trip.
