Turning into a disabled giant
I am nearly 36 weeks pregnant and I am HUGE. I don't mean that like it's a bad thing; it's a natural part of pregnancy. But for goodness sake, I am feeling it! In the last two weeks, it has become increasingly hard to get around. My formerly fast and driven "West Wing walk" has morphed into a labored amble. I can't stand up for long or walk for more than a couple of blocks. I can't pick myself up from the ground very easily without help which sadly forced me to back out of a camping trip at my favorite site in Big Sur this weekend. What a drag!
I have truly enjoyed the second half of my pregnancy and am still in great spirits, but my physical limitations have also made me incredibly empathetic to those with physical disabilities. Forever more, I vow to be much more helpful to those in need!
In case you need any proof, I submit the following photos from the last couple of weeks. They are not especially flattering, but do depict how large I've gotten.
Here Andy captured me, at 34 weeks, indoctrinating the baby with feminist ideology (The National NOW Times). You'll note that I'm no longer wearing my wedding ring.
I adore my husband and frankly this is an awkward time to look
single. But alas, I've swollen up like an overcooked sausage and
was forced to remove the ring before my finger turned blue and fell off. :(

Next is a pic from an awesome wedding Andy and I attended, also at 34 weeks. This was in Lake Tahoe and we were celebrating the nuptials of Andy's grad school friends, Lisa and Jacob. By the way, these two helped us paint the baby's room so double shout out for them. You'll note that Andy is quite appropriately sporting a John Muir-inspired look for this mountain-top wedding while I am more closely emulating John Muir's tent. [Note to future pregnant friends: very few maternity dresses are flattering, especially from the side!]
Finally, here is a picture taken at 35 weeks with my friend Molly who was -- I believe -- 22 weeks pregnant at the time. The funny thing is that when I first saw Molly that night, I thought, "Oh my gosh, she is really pregnant!" When I later saw these pictures I realized that, standing next to me, Molly hardly looks pregnant at all. I, on the other hand, look like the baby could fall out of me at any moment! :)

Last weekend Rene and I went to the public library in Claremont. Rene wanted a video about giants. So he practiced asking the librarian for exactly what he wanted. We ended up with a 1980s vhs tape of an elderly fellow who tells stories using fruits and vegetables. The butternut squash was the giant. Rene really enjoyed the video.
ReplyDeleteDoes Rene's new interest in Giants have anything to do with him witnessing his aunt turn into one? Hmmmm.
Oh thank goodness we don't have any of those giant fruits and veggies on the east coast and I don't think you look anything like a raspberry, a strawberry, or a blueberry in those pictures.
ReplyDeleteYou look simply gorgeous!
